In 1994 North Country Learning Center owners, Garry and Patsy Sherry, opened their first program for individuals with traumatic brain injury. North Country Independent Living (NCIL) evolved from their personal search to find a comfortable, caring place for Patsy's brother who sustained a serious brain injury in 1983. Garry knew from working at a large facility in the 1980s, that a smaller program able to integrate individuals into the community is what was needed.
NCIL was created with home-like living, a caring staff who treat people as individuals, with involvement in a small and accepting community where authentic rehabilitative experiences can occur.
North Country Learning Center, an approved private special education school, was developed in response to local schools and parents seeking an alternative to out-of-district residential placement of children with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Educations services are available for children and young adults, ages 8 - 21. The opportunity to transition to an adult residential program is available through NCIL.
